ResumenMOTIVATION. Bio-carriers are elements of varied geometry to which microorganisms adhere to form a biofilm and grow. They are fundamental in bioreactors, where maximizing the productivity of these microorganisms is of primary interest. This is achieved by optimizing the mass transfer from the substrate to the consuming biomass. To do so, the contact between the phases and the biofilm must be maximized. Simulating an entire packed bed is computationally unfeasible; therefore, the analysis of a single bio-carrier is proposed. OBJECTIVE. Based on an existing geometry, to develop the CFD model of the bio-carrier by varying the operating conditions (gas flow rate, liquid droplet size, and bio-carrier orientation, among others). Comparing the different results will allow the extraction of conclusions applicable to the full packed bed. FRAMEWORK. The simulations will be carried out using Ansys Fluent software. IMPACT. This research has the potential to significantly reduce the computational cost of bioreactor simulations of this type. It will also provide a level of physical detail that is otherwise inaccessible, facilitating faster bioprocess scaling and accelerating advances in biotechnology.
